His smile turns lethal. “Except today your spirit is busy, isn’t he?”
A golden thread in my being tugs inside of me; it weaves throughout, beginning the healing process, but also bringing those golden traces of truth. When intricate deep, red lines break across my arms, swirling, I understand. Father’s ability to control people like puppets didn’t come from his vessel. It’s hereditary.
A man with bronze skin and a white eyebrow piercing opens the back door of the car for me. “I don’t think we’ve officially met.” His smile darkens. “I’m Jasper, heir to the Zo Kingdom.”
“I will give my soul in exchange for Dagen, the King of Kings.” “Nizzara!” “It is you. You are the king. Find Yisabell when I am gone. Save her.”
After I ignore another demanding knock, it opens to a man in white robes. I jump to my feet, Nizzara’s dagger clutched in my fist. Thaddeus steps in. I’m starved and not capable of reigning in my darker self, so the monster inside begins climbing to the surface. Before I can take a step in his direction, dark purple smoke washes his face and it’s— “You’re in my room.” Her voice is just as menacing as I remember. My hand falls slack at my side, my voice splintering. “Lo.”
I don’t care if I’m the King of Kings. She cannot take my place in this realm. So, every night I come here.
“So, what are we going to do, Lo?” She smiles, that conniving smile of hers. “We will show them why you are the King of all Kings.”
