Advanced note: Breakaway gaps occur when a stock gaps up (moves higher) on higher than normal volume. This may be the start of a significant move, or so the bulls hope. A continuation gap, however, which appears similar to a breakaway gap, occurs about halfway through a trend before pausing, and then resumes trading.
