“What?” he asks innocently. “It’s true. I have to talk him into getting out of bed most mornings. He’s lost without Lucy, and I think Lucy should know that.”
He opened up to me and confessed his feelings, and instead of me being honest and telling him I’m in love with him, I called him a distraction.
“Luce,” Jude begins, pulling me from my thoughts. “I’ve known Cal almost my entire life. The only thing I’ve ever seen him really love was his job—until you. The moment he hired you, he changed. He loves you. And he’s my best friend, so I’m allowed to say this, but he isn’t built to love a lot of things. But when he does, he loves hard. I don’t think there’s anything you could do or say that he wouldn’t forgive you for. Call him. Tell him you love him—because I know you do—and then together, you can figure out the rest.”
“I can guarantee you that not speaking to him is hurting him more than any words you have said or could say to him,” Jude points out.
“I love him,”
“Yes, Luce, you do. Now, hang up the damn phone and call him.”
I’m broken. I’ve never had my heart broken, not really, and I hope to never feel something like this again. My entire body aches with regret and loss. It doesn’t help that I know I wouldn’t be feeling this way if I’d just been honest with Cal and myself to begin with. I should’ve known the love we shared was too intense to just fade away with time and distance apart.
“I love you, Callahan Hastings,” she says, her voice strong. Her smile gets even wider as she moves her hands to cup my cheeks. “I love you so much that these last two weeks have been torture without you. I don’t know what I was thinking, and I’m sorry for hurting you and pushing you away, but I love you.”
