“No,” Lucy answers. A corner of my mouth lifts as I look in her direction. I cock my head to the side. Oh, this is a fun twist. Why is she lying?
“Good girl,” I whisper, the words taking me by surprise. Luckily, it seems like the praise came out low enough that she didn’t hear me.
“I get to spend the day with you. My day could never be ruined.”
This makes him laugh. I’m learning to love the sound of his laugh—the real one. He has a sarcastic one he uses often, but this real one, the one that rumbles deep in his chest…it’s kind of sexy. Can you find a man’s laugh sexy without finding him sexy?
“Teach me, then.”
He clears his throat. I meet his gaze as he grabs the edge of the countertop and leans forward. The intensity with which he stares at me, his lips set in a hard line, makes my pulse spike. “You know you can talk to me, right?” His voice comes out gruff.
He eats me out like a man who’s been starved, and it feels far too good to keep quiet.
“You’ve ruined me, Lucy baby. I need you to know that.”
Tears freely fall down my face. “I don’t need you to be there for me.” His head rears back as if I’d slapped him. The hurt is written all over his face as his blue eyes scan my face. “Why do you feel like you have to handle everything on your own?”
He’s my safe space, my other half.
