He’s smiling. He’s smiling at me. He’s smiling at me like we’re friends. Like he didn’t wrap his hands around my neck and almost kill me a few nights ago.
“You drew me.” His voice is leaking nothing but ego while I grapple for a way to defend myself.
Adrian considers me. “You know, this might be the part where you thank me for saving your life.” Teeth chattering, I say, “You waited at least a minute before jumping in.”
“I’m burning out of academic motivation at light speed,
He gives me a gentle smile that almost works. “I’ve got you. Nothing is going to happen, alright?” I swallow. “That’d be a lot more comforting if it came from someone who wasn’t you.”
I’m going to die a cliché, Adrian’s going to cover up my death, and my mother’s probably going to wear some ugly hot pink maxi dress to my funeral.
I’m not sure “friendship with Adrian” and “nobody has to get hurt in the process” are two things that go together – but I’m not going to trample over our carefully constructed peace if I don’t have a reason to.
“So say yes or I’ll make a scene so bad this entire room will be begging for your expulsion before the day’s over.”
“It was that pathetic display at your locker.” His face suddenly darkens, every ounce of softness disappearing. “You pulled out that pitiful little rose, and you had all this stunned excitement on your face. For him. For someone else.” My breath catches. “Adrian –” His jaw ticks. “It was fucking revolting.”
His gaze keeps me rooted to the spot. “I like you, sweetheart. I like you a lot. We’re not friends. We’re going to be more than that.”
“I have no intention of killing you,” he says with an eye-roll.
“You’re a monster,” I whisper. He just blinks at me – unfazed. “You knew that already,” he says quietly and strokes the mark he left on my neck. “But I’m a monster infatuated.”
“You poisoned her.” I bristle. “Barely.”
Roddy’s quickly assures everyone he’s not going to jump – he just wanted to tear his Oxford rejection letter apart and watch the pieces fly from three stories up.
For the first time, I understand where Adrian and I stand more than he does. Limerence. But not love.
