“Little girl. You have no idea what you are doing. You can’t play with monsters unless you’re willing to become one yourself.”
“Why do I feel like I have known you longer? That this isn’t the first time we’ve done this?” The questions come out before I can think how crazy they might sound. Darius drops my hand as if it burns. His eyebrows draw together and his mouth opens on an O. He looks freaked out, concerned, worried. He forces out a laugh but it doesn’t convince either of us.
“We all agreed, you know? Even Tripp. That we wouldn’t try to date you. We promised Auggie we wouldn’t.”
“You are too kind, too pure. This world doesn’t deserve you, baby girl.”
“Oh, precious Wildflower, you are never going to be alone again. Not as long as any of us live and breathe. You may not know it yet, but our fates are tied intrinsically. You will forever be wrapped in our presence.”
“He does what he has to. He keeps me safe.” She licks the liquid away before it can roll down her face. “Your brother did what he could to keep you safe and mine did the same.”
“You stupid, idiot girl. We try to keep you alive, but you keep dying! Ninety-nine deaths. I’ve watched you die ninety-nine times before this.”
