Livia leaned around her father, watching the boy. More curious than the princess’s stare was when Bloodsinger glanced over his shoulder. Whether he sensed the eyes of another on him, or something else, he quickly found the Night Folk princess. Livia peeled her gaze back to the table, cheeks flushed in embarrassment. Erik narrowed his eyes, almost confused, before he was dragged out of sight.
Elise pressed a hand to her heart, smiling. “That girl is too bleeding good for this cruel world. She’s befriending him, Valen.”
Malin smiled when we appeared in the doorway, her gown was like liquid silver. I smiled back. This was the moment—I could recall it now—but I knew this was the moment I’d shown the dying memory queen all those turns ago. A true queen of fate seated beside her king amidst the united thrones.
I was their storyteller. I’d been the one to guide them once, but somewhere along the way we’d switched places. They guided me, taught me, loved me. The fools had already dragged me into their family before discovering the truth, but even more now, they treated me as their own. Like their blood family.
Valen kissed me sweetly, resting his head against mine. “I love you, Elise Ferus. You’ve given me . . . everything. My freedom, my home, my life. But your heart, this family you’ve given me, it is the greatest gift I could ever want.”
“I hate this tunic.” Jonas flopped back on a fur coated chaise, tugging at the high collar of the blue tunic. Sander scratched his neck beside his brother but didn’t complain. Merely added a kick to Jonas’s shin. “It’s your good tunic, and you’ll wear it without complaining,” I said, adjusting the black circlet in my braids. “Damn the hells, I hate this tunic.” Kase shoved in from the washroom, tugging at his own collar.
