We had to have time.
Herja’s smile widened. “I stand with the Ferus line the same as the fool in the back.” I hated the idea of killing Valen’s sister, but if she betrayed us now, I would not hesitate. When it came to freeing him, I could not afford any added risks. But Herja turned her smirk to Stave. “I stand with my sister, Elise Ferus. The hjӓrta of my brother. I would give my loyalty to no one else. And you are fortunate you have such a forgiving queen. Had you spoken to me in such a way, the point of that knife would be pierced into the back of your throat, not a slab of wood.”
You met your match in the Queen of Etta, Jarl Magnus. You cannot break her, but she will undoubtedly break you.”
I despised fate. She never did make life’s path simple.
“Do you need to review these again?” Truth be told, I had not seen him glance at the plans once. He tapped the side of his head. “I know my marks.” Yes, that is how Junius and Niklas described every movement. As if this plan were more a dance than a rising battle. We all had marks to meet.
“Ah, Valen, I think our nephew is fond of you.” I shuddered, but forced a grin, my head in a haze. “Boy, when we s-stop taunting each other, then it is time to f-fret over one of us dying.”
A yearning for another had never been as fierce as it was with Elise. Like those surrounding me, she was my family. My heart. I would not rest until these bloodied hands touched her. Even once more.
They laughed as they slashed their blades. As if battle and bloodshed were the greatest part of their day. Falkyns who remained with us fought much the same. Alver magic was thrilling, odd, and deadly.
“I fought a battle not for a kingdom. I doubt I ever will. I fought for you, Elise. I would destroy everything to see you safe and breathing. I suppose that makes me rather selfish, perhaps wicked, but no less the truth. For you, I would destroy the world.”
“This moment,” he whispered, tangling my damp hair around one hand and tugging my head back, “is our prize for victory, Elise. You, me, our life together, it was worth it all. I would fight all over again, fall into bloodlust and curses as many times as the cruel Norns demanded, if it meant I got to live out my days with you.”
