“I like talking to you. And I think you liked talking to me.” “What makes you think that?” I shot back. “Your eyes were a little less sad and a little more…” I waited. “Interested.”
“You want me to kiss you, sad eyes? Because the way you’re staring at me says you do.”
Come with me, Rafe is a useless guide. And anyway, Banjo sent me to rescue you. He said you’re a good one, so that’s enough for me.”
“Lacey. Go out with me.” Jagger let out a gasp from the passenger seat and then clapped her hands with glee. “Well, this just got interesting!”
Rafe appeared on Jagger’s side of the car. “Look at you right now, Banjo. You’re fucking ridiculous. Your ego is so big I could stroke it from out here.” Banjo grinned at him. “Come on, we all know it’s not my ego you want to stroke.”
“The pauper bows to the princess, Colt. You’d do well to remember that.”
“So, your plan is to just go all high school detective like you’re Veronica Mars or something?”
Sparks shot up my arm as if I’d been electrocuted. Colt stopped and looked down at my hand in surprise, which quickly morphed to amusement.
“Can we talk?” he asked me. “Banjo!” Colt said again. “You’d better go. Your king is calling.” “He’s not my king,” Banjo muttered. “Could have fooled me,” I said quietly. There was no malice in my voice this time, though.
“Miss Halten, if she can’t make a decision, I’d be happy to go first,” Gillian said. “I choose Banjo.” Banjo and Colt both snapped their heads forward. Colt narrowed his eyes.
But the entire time, it was me he watched.
“I’m not going to let anything happen to you. I promise.”
“Get over here, Lacey,” he groaned. “Fuck, get over here right now.”
“Tell me, Lacey. It’ll be better with two, but I won’t if you aren’t okay with it. Is this enough for you?” I shook my head. “That’s my girl.”
Ever so slowly, he raised them to his mouth, sucking them inside. Holy hell.
“You a virgin, princess?”
“I don’t think that’s how this is supposed to work. I offer to touch your dick, and you instead decide to feed me?” He scrubbed his hands over his face and groaned. “Come on. Let’s go get that food before my dick realizes what I’ve done.”
We both put our arms on the armrest at the same time. A spark of energy crackled over my skin when it made contact with his. His head snapped in my direction, and I snatched my arm back.
“I love it. Your brother obviously doesn’t know how to win my heart.” Banjo went quiet. “Is that what I’m doing?”
“Thing is, Colt,” I said quietly, my voice as deadly as his was. “You can try, but I’m not breakable.”
What did it matter how we got rid of Lacey? All I knew was that I couldn’t be around her. Not then. Not now. Not ever.
Rafe did a double take at my appearance, but then his eyes narrowed, his gaze raking over my face.
“What the fuck happened? Have you been crying all day? Is this about Colt and Gillian?”
The minute Rafe looked at me with kindness and care in his gaze, I dissolved once more.
Rafe’s gaze clashed with mine, and something hot and heady passed between us. “I’m in,” he said, voice tight.
Banjo grinned. “Are you? I’m a fucking excellent kisser, Rafe. You might just fall in love if you kiss me right now. Lacey can vouch for me.” Rafe shook his head. “Shut up, dickhead. Kiss me then. Blow my mind.”
“Fuck it,” Rafe murmured. He leaned in, lips locking with Banjo’s. Banjo was quick to respond. He grabbed Rafe’s face and pushed him back until his head hit the wall. It was rougher, harder, all the softness they’d had with me gone out the window while they both tussled
for control.
There was something beautiful about that kiss. Something that got me deep in the feels. Something that told me the two of them had been waiting to do this longer than either would admit.
“Get your mouth on it then. Before I do,” Banjo
Rafe lay back on the bed and patted the space next to him. “Lacey sandwich.”
“Be good to our girl.”
My heart thumped. Our girl. Was that what I was? Warmth kindled inside me when Banjo nodded.
“You’re perfect, you know that?” he said, kissing my shoulder. “We are,” I corrected. “We’re perfect.” In that moment, I believed it.
“Didn’t you hear what she said?” Colt’s voice was dangerously low.
“She said she wants to talk to me. So unless you want me to lay you out flat on the sand, I suggest you sit your scrawny ass down and shut the fuck up.”
It would be hours later before I realized Banjo had never said I love you back.
