Congratulations on the release! A twentysomething in the office reports she’s heard of you.
Immediately, my cheeks go hot, and my eyes slam shut. Like if I can’t see him, he won’t be able to see what he’s doing to me. Charlie pauses, and I can almost feel him weighing his options. Trying to decide what to do next. You might only get this once, I remind myself. I open my eyes to find his gaze still on me, bright and serious. He brings his hand to my chin, gently tugs on my lip with his thumb, and whispers, “Thank you,” as if I’m the one doing him a favor.
Fans are a community. Fans are a force. And fans are also a detective unit.
And? What’s your secret? It’s like he’s in the room with me; I can imagine exactly how he’d sound, saying those words. The look he’d give me to go along with them. I feel it right between my legs.
I don’t feel energized or even relieved. I feel . . . hollowed out. Almost like I used to when I turned in my last paper for the semester. Walked out of a final. That was hard, but I did it. Now I’m free. Free from what, to do what? I have no idea.
“He should have known better,” I say.
