In the 1980s National Security Council member Oliver North schemed to sell weapons illegally to Iran in order to fund the Contras in a guerrilla war against Nicaragua’s socialist Sandinistas. Although Congress had voted against it, North and his NSA and CIA collaborators decided they knew better. During his testimony to Congress, which he agreed to in exchange for immunity, North basically explained he had been willing to get the job done and by any means necessary.
