For the girls who want their cowboys a little dark. I hope Booker and his friends fulfill some of those fantasies for you.
I think I like the dark side.
Unlike when I saw him in the alley, he now wore a skeleton mask that took up half his face, with a black cowboy hat casting him in a slight shadow.
“Oh, don’t get off your knees for me, Darlin’. I quite liked you down there.”
I was really standing here arguing with a woman I’d just met. A woman I had no interest in fighting for. Any other girl, I’d have sent her to the curb by now. I didn’t have time for attitude, and yet here she stood, full of it, and I was only encouraging the behavior. I should bend her over a fucking chair and spank her till her ass was red just to teach her a little lesson, my handprint the only thing she could feel.
“I’ll only tell you my name if you’re a good little slut and beg for it.”
“I’d be careful mouthing off while you’re on your knees before me. Never know what I’ll fill this little mouth with to make you shut up.”
I had no fucking idea what I was doing, but whatever it was, I was doing it.
“Swallow your fear, Darlin’. Don’t let it control you. Bend that fear to your advantage and use it as fuel.”
“The only one you need to be afraid of in this world is me, Brynne. Anyone else, and I won’t hesitate to kill them.”
“You’re the only woman I do fucking feel for, Brynne, and it pisses me the fuck off.”
He lit me like a goddamn light bulb, and I never wanted to be turned off.
If anyone hurt my girl, I’d gut the fucker who thought he could get away with it. Rip his sternum wide open and remove organ after organ while he begged for mercy. But that’s where he’d fucked up big time. I didn’t grant mercy to those who took what was mine. I rid them of every bloody piece inside them, the thing that kept them living, because that’s what it felt like in this moment, not knowing where Brynne was.
Swallow your fear, Darlin’. I’m coming.
“Open those eyes, bitch. Let me see your fear.” But I didn’t. I swallowed that shit down like a fucking pill and acted on impulse.
“Swallow your fear, Darlin’. Don’t let it control you. Bend that fear to your advantage and use it as fuel.”
“See, that’s the problem, Lance. You’re playing a part in being a bad guy.” I looked up again, meeting his gaze. “But I’m not acting.” I moved a hand to my shirt as if I was simply rubbing an itch. “I am the fucking villain.”
