There are very few reasons for a meeting between two cloaked figures in the dead of night. Unsurprisingly, the list is as short as it is unseemly. For some, it is love. For most, it is lust. Lust for money. Lust for purpose. Lust for revenge. But in some cases, it is love that first spurs these lusts. Or rather, the loss of it. Though these odd contradictories are rare, they are consistently tragic.
“So bow at my feet with a sneer, if you must. I won’t see it with your face to the ground.”
“I could die—” He closes the distance between us, pressing rough palms against my cheeks. “So damn the Trials. Pae, let me force every person in this kingdom to their knees for you.”
Her palm finds my face in a gentle caress. “You’re not him.” Those three words threaten to shatter me to pieces.
“Everyone loses themselves to something. So make it worthwhile.”
“May I ask why you’re here, Your Majesty?” This is said with as much respect as I can muster. “You may.” She shrugs an eerily smooth shoulder. “But I may not give you an answer.” “Of course,” I murmur between my teeth.
“You know,” he says genuinely, “I can’t think of a single reason you’d wish to escape me.” “Your arrogance is astounding as always, Kai.” “Thank you.” I cut him a glance. “That wasn’t a compliment.” “Then don’t say my name, and I won’t thank you for the sound.”
Power is a sickness that corrupts all those who get a taste.
“Are you completely unaware of how devastating you are?” Kai chuckles darkly. “You don’t need a blade. I would bleed if only you asked.” “Then I wouldn’t ask,” I retort sternly.
