The brothers are lost without each other. Kitt, because his Enforcer is no longer his. And Kai, because his king has died in his arms.
Come home and give me another chance at being your brother.
“No. You are strength. Life itself. That is why Death fears you.” “All I do is fear Death,” she corrects. “Fear losing you.”
“Death knows better than to try and drag me from you.”
“Your promises are not broken. They are just awaiting you.”
This is a boy who has known little more than hardship his whole life, wounded by the man who raised him and left by the brother who loved him.
You were the good in his life. The anchor he clung to.”
“We are all just shadows of what we believe to be true.”
“I think we got it wrong in Dor. You are the Flame. And I… I am the Shadow falling at your feet.”
Admittedly, I fail to be a diversion from Kitt’s death. Foolishly, a poet tells me I am never not his distraction.
After finally letting himself feel for someone, he fears I’ll walk away. A king stands before me, stripped bare, and back to the boy who was forced to believe love was a weakness.
“At the end of a blade, I would love you. Until it pierced my throat, I would say ‘yes’ to you.”
“You’re quite the poet, darling.”
Above, poppies’ red petals bleed into pink roses while the deep blue of dainty forget-me-nots weaves between.
King and queen. Shadow and Flame. Poet and muse.
“You finally did it. You made a flower crown.”
“You are mine, Malakai.”
He wears his symbol of our union on the same finger I do—a reminder of our love, and the love of a lost brother.
And just as he has for however long he’s been dead, Kitt wishes for company.
The softer star informs, “Life ripped us apart.” “Death brought us together,” the rougher one finishes.
“Until you see your brother again, if you like.” The deep voice rumbles above him. “We are all waiting for someone.”
