She takes a breath, the type that sounds like loving someone despite their flaws.
“And don’t you mean dinner with your betrothed?” “Right,” I mumble. “I forget what a happy couple we are.”
If I return from these Trials, it will be as less of myself. I’m running out of loved ones to watch die in my arms, so perhaps it will be me this time around.
They share a single glance. It’s that brotherly bond that can never be broken—except by perhaps me,
“Tell me, Paedyn,” Zailah croons, her voice a sort of lulling melody. “Are we going to be friends?” My answer is honest. “I hope so.” “Splendid.” She smiles like it’s a weapon. “I do love a good enemy, but I have no need for any more of those.”
“Being an Ordinary is not what makes you weak. It’s your heart.”
“She talked about you all the time. And then she died for simply knowing you.”
“I think the kingdom finally saw you for what you are—fearsome.” “Glad to see something good came out of my pain, then,” Pae bites out. “A lot of good,” Kitt corrects, “came from very short-lived pain. That is why I did it.”
“We are half siblings,” Kitt finally blurts.
