A soft string of words over a shoulder is all the man offers. “Every brutal act is born of love.”
His lips twitch into something too sinister for a smile, too soft for a scowl. As though he wears formidability itself. “The future queen of Ilya bows her head to no one.”
“Calum was once a prisoner of mine. Once a Resistance leader who I thought was a radical.”
“it became clear to me how vulnerable Ordinaries really are in this kingdom—” “No shit,” I breathe recklessly into the darkness.
I’m slightly offended by the lack of surprise
“If you want me to fight you, I won’t, Paedyn. I told you in that field of poppies how I would never do that again. That when I lay a hand on you, it would only ever be in a caress.”
“So, in the wise words of Adena, this is simply a good way to say bye until… whatever the hell.”
“But I enjoy seeing you giddy like this. It reminds me of Adena and her boy from Loot.”
Soul. This ability allowed her to sense and manipulate another’s emotions. More than once, Iris had used it on the king to turn the pressures of ruling into a spark of happiness that he only ever felt when she was around.
The queen sits stoically in one of the plushy seats beside the stone fireplace, her gaze gleaming with amusement.
“Don’t fear power. Wield it. Perhaps even let it control you.” The queen smiles sharply. “Being an Ordinary is not what makes you weak. It’s your heart.”
The king grins. Marrying Myla Rowe will earn him power. Earn him a son he can mold into a weapon. This is all it takes for the king to claim the child as his own. All the power. All the glory. “I accept your proposal,” Edric says to his adviser, eyes still pinned on the strength squirming in his Silencer’s arms. “He will be mine.”
“Adena died here. I want to die here too.” Blood trickles from my ears, mingling with the tears racing down my face. “I couldn’t save her then. But I can save you now.”
“Through the chest, remember?” A tear rolls down my cheek, carving a path through the sand sticking there. “That is how I want to die. Just like the ones I’ve loved.”
