Then came news from Midway, an American-held atoll about eleven hundred miles from Hawaii but considered part of that archipelago. The Japanese had attempted a surprise attack, but it did not come as a surprise to the Americans. The intelligence the War Department had shared with MacArthur had proved accurate. On June 4, 1942, the Japanese sent four aircraft carriers into the fight. None would make it out.
