Responsibility for the main attack on Rabaul would rest with MacArthur. But before undertaking it, he would have the task of clearing the northeastern coast of New Guinea—the world’s second largest non-continental island, stretching above Australia on MacArthur’s modified map all the way from his mother’s hometown of Norfolk, Virginia, to the Great Plains.
