There was one he seemed especially to relish during his days in Australia: an outline of the United States superimposed over a swath of the Southwest Pacific. Even a cursory look at the resulting image reveals the audacity of his vow to return to the Philippines. Between Melbourne, where his quest would begin, and Manila, where he hoped to finish it, is an area vastly larger than the mainland United States.
