Around two o’clock, a marine who had marched out of the Malinta Tunnel with a musician and a flag-bearer an hour earlier returned with a message: The Japanese would receive only Wainwright. So out of the tunnel he had gone. In the Chevrolet with his aides, he had driven as close as he could to the Japanese lines and then walked with a white flag toward the artillery lobbing shells over their heads and the machine guns firing past them.
