MacArthur no longer saw the faces of the men who had followed him in France. He saw Communists bent on revolution. They, in turn, would see the chief of staff, with his medals and decorations gleaming, take to the streets with his troops when orders came to clear the protesters. By the end of the night, the bonus marchers’ camp had gone up in flames.
