Curiosity was her catnip, mystery her narcotic.
She’d thrown the gauntlet, and fuck him if he didn’t pick it up.
“And I don’t want to kiss you,” he stated bluntly. “Neither is true.” Salem blinked again, thrown off by his declaration. “Why don’t you kiss me?”
a seductive combination. A corner of his mouth twitched. “Cute.” He tapped her nose with the pencil before moving it down her neck, this time not stopping at the edge of the shirt but going past it, curving over the rise of her right breast, which she became acutely aware of as the tip wandered closer and closer to her nipple, that was peaked and jutting like a beacon calling a ship home.
But venom had never tasted better, like the mint and coffee she smelled on his breath, like the desire and deviance she saw in his eyes, like the sin and seduction she heard in his voice.
She, Salem Salazar, cold, frigid bitch, was about to cry and mewl in the hands of a man. Who would’ve ever thought?
She might not know anything else about him, but she knew that he hadn’t left her alone when he had all the reasons to, and that was enough for now.
“What is beyond murder?” “Damnation.”
“Because I was a man on the path to damnation and I saw salvation instead. Because being near you makes me feel something beyond rage. Because the chaos inside me quietens when I’m near you.” His words were shaking by the end of his sentence, his hands holding her possessively. “You’ve become my muse, little asp.”
A part of her liked it, the public validation, the public claiming, the public proclamation a positive experience pleasing her inner self.
“Insanity is a spectrum,” he answered, like he was in class and provoking her. “We’re all a little mad here.”
Post-orgasm clarity was a thing for a reason.
“Because life with you feels greater than death. Because you make the artist in me burn with the need to create, make the man in me burn with the need to possess, make the killer in me burn with the need to protect. You make me want to live, Salem. You give me a modicum of peace in a world of chaos. Is that reason enough?”
