The symbol is very different. The sumbola is from the Greek and literally meant “thrown together” (sum-bollein) and, probably originally, an “agreement” or “contract.” It referred to things like a shard of pottery broken in half and then given to two business partners so that the deal could be recognized later by a perfect match, or the wholeness of the doubled human who had not been split apart into genders and sexualities.
