“Sami!”
akrai.”
“Veruka hereby swears her loyalty to House Martinez.” “House Martinez?” I looked toward Samkiel.
it was like I’d lost the scent of him. Oddly, I hadn’t realized how accustomed I was to his scent. As soon as he slipped the bracelet on, I ached with the loss of it. I didn’t like it, nor did my Ig’Morruthen, for that matter. My fangs slipped past my gums, and it wasn’t until they all turned toward me that I realized a growl had slipped from me. I clamped a hand over my mouth. “Sorry,”
She also brought my sister back to me when she didn’t have to. I will not let her suffer.”
I threw my head back and laughed. Veruka’s eyes widened as her ryphor curved through the sky next to us. I hadn’t told her of the power I had crafted into our rings because, no matter what Orym said, I did not trust her fully. Dianna was right. Veruka smelled of my brother, and I wasn’t convinced it was just for the sake of the mission.
“Watch how you speak to her,” I said, keeping my voice low and my eyes forward. I felt the tension leaking from Veruka as she cleared her throat. “I meant no disrespect, but she is not battle-trained.” My hand went to her arm, and I pulled her to the side, turning her to face me. “She will be your queen.” I could see the resignation in her eyes, and I let her go. “Does she know that?” “What is that supposed to mean?” I asked in a hushed voice as a few soldiers passed. “I barely know her, mostly only what Orym has said. Her will and alliance are to you and your family, but the realms? She does

“Sami.”
Sami,
I’d have you with or without a crown. As long as I have you.”
That warmth spread, not just in my head or through my body, but it flooded my fucking heart. This woman… she was my everything.
“This isn’t just a map of this world. It’s a map of every single one she’s planning to hit.”
Veruka yelped as two soldiers appeared next to her and rammed a blade into her gut. They pulled it out, and she fell forward, right into their arms.
The ground shook and quaked as Dianna’s massive form lunged toward the sky, blocking out the sun. Powerful black wings unfurled from her back, the remains of the tent falling from her spikes. “Ig’Morruthen!” The shout rang out, and then the world erupted in flames.
“Neverra has always been humble and sweet, but she, by far, is my strongest celestial.”
“All the women in my life want to kick my ass,” I joked.
I was a killing machine, one made of fire and sharp edges. A weapon was what they all said, and a weapon was what I felt like.
“Don’t do that again.” “What? Destroy those who threaten you with my blade?” “No. You don’t ask me to choose.” His eyes softened. “Dianna.” “Don’t Dianna or baby or akrai me,” I said, meaning every word as I pushed him again. He didn’t stumble or even move, really, and that just made me even more mad. “You will not like the outcome if you ask me to choose between you and someone else again. And I don’t care if you huff or roar or stay pissed at me. I am not the hero. That’s your job.”
was flying too fast, and I couldn’t stop. This time, my arrogance may truly be the death of me. I flung my head and mantled my wings, trying to slow my forward momentum, but it was too late. “Sami.” I hadn’t realized I had reached out to him along our bond until his terror flooded me. He felt my fear, my apprehension, and I heard him scream my name. I took a deep breath, preparing for the pain of hitting that net, but it didn’t come. Instead, a massive gray and black form slammed into my chest from below, forcing me up. It screeched in pain, a hollow, deadly sound. I echoed his cry, the edges

I hadn’t hesitated when I saw her take flight, heading straight into their trap. I had never transformed before, not once, but some innate power rose in me, and I just followed my instincts.
His voice was like music to my fucking ears. I hadn’t just lost my leader and my king when I thought he’d died, but also my best fucking friend. “Are you real?” My voice cracked. “Or is this another sad dream?” His eyes softened, but it was true. Every time I closed my eyes, I dreamed I had saved him. I dreamed I had fought, saved Xavier, and we had stayed. Gods, I hated myself. It hurt to cry, the sobs racking my body and reopening my wounds. I couldn’t stop the tears. Every bit of fear and guilt and regret and grief came pouring out.
“Gods, I’ve missed hearing you two bicker.”
Samkiel finally had his queen, and she was worthy of him in every way. She would have torn the realms apart for him and hadn’t even let death come between them.
Samkiel was alive, and I was finally safe.
Dianna cast a flirtatious grin toward him. “Gods, you’re so hot and so smart.” “I agree,” I said against my smooshed pillow. “You look great for a half-dead guy. Or a recently dead guy.
“Exactly,” she pressed. “You’d probably blow him if he asked at this point.” My head whipped toward her. There was disgust on her face, and Samkiel looked at her with worried eyes. I knew he was wondering if Kaden had demanded the same from her when she’d first been changed.
“You want to eat me?” she asked, her smile bordering on a smirk. I finished the blood and lowered the glass. “No,” I practically snapped. “Yes… No… Not like that.”
“Maybe send Samkiel in here to feed me.” “It won’t help. You’d still want to feed and fuck him, too.” A snort left my lips. “Who doesn’t?”
“Have you had sex since he turned you?” she asked. “No.” “Why?” “Because it’s what drove Xavier away in the first place.” I felt my chest tighten, and moisture pricked my eyes. “It’s what got him caught in the first place. Me and Elianna.”
I wanted to drive him away, proving to myself that it was never real, that it never meant anything. I wanted him to hate me like I hated myself, maybe even punish me. All I was doing, though, was lying to myself and trying to bury my feelings.
“Because I got his sister killed.”
“That’s my dirty secret, and Kaden used it against me. I got Xavi’s sister killed because I stayed out too late. Instead of going on the mission with Athos, I wanted to sleep off my hangover. They sent Kryella and her team instead, and…
Stop blaming yourself, and if you love him, fight for him. Regardless of what happened between you two, I know he would fight for you.”
Xavier lost the most important person to him, and it was my fault. Maybe he was better off without me. That was why I never told him how I truly felt. How could I? Our whole friendship was built on my guilt. I loved a man who I had damned.
The corners of my lips lifted in a sad smile. It was so strange to see how much she had changed. She had been a being of pure rage and wrath, and now here she was, comforting me and giving me relationship advice. Samkiel had really helped her, but he had always seen her. He had been right all along. We never knew the real her before she lost her sister. Dianna was always a protector. Now, she had the firepower to back it up.
“I knew you guys were fucking mates. No one else could handle him, honestly. The man has an ego.”
Warmth spread across my chest, knowing he had finally found the one thing he had been searching for all his life.
Dianna stopped, and darkness built in the room. “She will find, like so many others, that taking me, army or not, is no easy task.” She looked at me over her shoulder, her eyes burning and blazing red. “I fear no gods and no kings.”
It was deep into the night, and the castle was dimly lit, but I didn’t need night vision to know a grumpy god was there.
snorted, not needing my ring to know what he was feeling. His eyes were hard and glittering, and I could read every emotion that flickered in their depths. Yup, definitely grumpy.
“He can’t help how he feels,” I said. “Don’t make this more difficult on him, okay? He was turned, used, and left.” “Like you?” he asked. I chewed the inside of my lip, thinking of how to word the next part gently. “Not really. Kaden helped me more.” That didn’t help. Samkiel bristled, the perfect line of his jaw flexing. “Before or after he asked you to… How did you word it? Blow him?” Samkiel said, and I felt the storm in his voice.
Samkiel looked away, his jaw clenched. “I like this fantasy I have in my head where you are mine and mine alone, and you have been for centuries.”
Pain that cut that deeply left scar tissue.
Samkiel was a step behind me, just as he always was. He was my soul given form.
“Did you mean it?” Emotions were swirling deep in his eyes. They glowed, but not Otherworldly, not as if he were angry, but with a raw, keening vulnerability, and I knew what he was referring to before he even said his next words. “The part where you said you loved me. Before…”
“Samkiel, I have loved you since we left Reggie’s vortex, and sometimes, when I think about it, I think I loved you before that too.”
“I’m not going anywhere, Camilla,” He said, his smile fading. “But you are.” “What?” My heart thudded in my chest, echoing the sound of his boots as he stomped to the door and flung it open. A soldier entered, holding a long, blunt-ended golden trident. Electricity shot from the prongs, wrapping me in a net of sizzling sparks. My body shook, and my magic fizzled as my knees hit the floor. My eyes widened and filled with tears. “You treacherous snake.” Vincent folded his arms over his broad chest. “I never lied about who I was. You were just too simple to believe it.” “I’ll kill you!” I gritted

I made no move to escape, accepting my fate. Truth be told, I should have died with my coven.
