Each time he finished a postcard, Alec wrote Wish you were here at the end. And each time, Magnus snatched the card and wrote, with a flourish, Except not really.
It was as though each of them had discovered something unexpected but infinitely desirable.
He’d stood in the hall of his ancestors and kissed Magnus full on the mouth under the eyes of all the Nephilim assembled there. It had been the most profound and lovely surprise of Magnus’s long life.
“The Spiral Council have issued a formal demand that you, Magnus Bane, High Warlock of Brooklyn, neutralize the human cult of demon worshippers known as the Crimson Hand. Immediately.”
Magnus hadn’t told Alec that his father was a Prince of Hell.
Magnus, people are saying that you are the original founder and the new leader of the Crimson Hand.”
Thinking of Jace now, he realized whom the warlock woman Tessa had reminded him of. Her expression, serious but with a quiet light behind it, was exactly Jace’s when he was playing the piano.
Asmodeus was the Prince of Hell who had fathered Magnus himself.
“Many a mission to end a great evil has failed because of low blood sugar.”
“I’ve changed my mind,” Catarina announced. She put her arm around Alec’s neck and gave him a kiss on the cheek. “I like you.” “Oh,” said Alec, looking baffled. “Thanks.” “Please take care of Magnus,” Catarina added. “I try,” said Alec. Catarina gave Magnus a delighted look over Alec’s shoulder. “At last,” she murmured. “A keeper.”
“He’s very devoted,” Shinyun continued, gazing at Alec. His eyes were closed, but his arm was curved protectively around Magnus, even in sleep. “Doesn’t he ever quit?” She reached out a hand to touch Magnus’s, but Magnus felt the muscles in Alec’s body go tense the moment before the Shadowhunter’s hand shot out to grab her wrist. “I don’t,” said Alec.
“You saved yourself,” Alec said into Magnus’s ear. “You saved yourself, and then you saved so many people. You couldn’t have saved anyone if you hadn’t saved yourself. I would never have found you.”
“Come and hold me. I want you next to me.”
“All right, lunatic Lightwood. Lead the way. Let’s go get your man.”
“Alexander,” Magnus whispered. “I told you not to hold on.”
Alec pulled him even closer. Into Magnus’s ear he whispered, “I would never let you go.”
“Stop telling me to let you go,” said Alec. “I will never listen. I want to be with you. I never wanted anything more in my life. If you fall, I want to fall with you.” “Stay with me,” Magnus said, taking Alec’s face in his hands. The fires burning around them, reflected in Alec’s eyes, became stars. “I love being with you. I love everything about you, Alexander.”
But as someone once said to me, the right man will not care. You can build a bridge over the divide and find each other. You can build something much greater than either of you could ever have built on your own.”
“Love changes you. Love changes the world. You cannot lose that love, no matter how long you live, I think. Trust love. Trust him.”
“I’ve never loved anybody like this before. Maybe I’m not saying it right, but it’s what I feel.” I’ve never loved anybody like this before. Magnus’s heart seemed to break open, spilling love and desire through his veins. “Alec,” Magnus whispered. “You said everything perfectly.”
