“You’re like sunshine, you know? Sounds cheesy, but it’s true. I always feel so much better when you’re around.”
That’s when I know I’m in love with her.
But in my heart of hearts, I know that somehow, over the course of an hour, maybe less, I’ve fallen in love with my best friend. Or maybe I’ve been in love with her all along, and the realization is only hitting me now.
Really, Wyatt got this sunshine thing all wrong. He’s the one who’s the sun. The rest of us just float in his orbit, waiting our turn to bask in his warmth and attention.
I really don’t want to leave. Being with Wyatt always feels like coming home.
“Sally’s a grown woman. She’s the one who gets to decide what’s good for her and what’s not.”
“Fall apart with me another time then?”
“Ain’t nothin’ little about me, sugar. If the sound of that scares you, you’d better find yourself another fake date.”
Choose me. Goddamn, Sunshine, I’m dying for you to choose me.
Can’t help but smile. This is Hartsville in a nutshell—a little bit classy, a lot country.
I wanna kiss you so bad it hurts.
I’m able to rest my chin on her shoulder and murmur sweet nothings in hear ear about gambling like a degenerate.
“Don’t make me say it. You know, Sunshine. You know I wanna be your guy.”
“Sugar, you got no idea the kinda hurt you’re puttin’ on me right now. I could chop wood with this thing.” He gestures to his lap.
“Fuck,” he bites out, covering his crotch with his hand. I stare at him. “Wait. Did you actually—” “Just come in my pants?” He grimaces. “Yes.”
Ask me for more. Please, God, ask me for the world so I can give it to you.
Maybe I was born to be wild and free too. Maybe we all are, every living thing.
“Ready for your next lesson?” Her eyes flash. “Yes.” “Good. On your knees, Sunshine.”
“The day you showed up for me when I needed you most?” I swallow, my throat thick. “Yeah, Sally, I did get a slutty little thigh tattoo to commemorate that.”
“You saved my life, you know,” I huff out. Her teeth find my palm. Her eyes flash with something I don’t recognize. “Maybe you’re saving mine too.”
I’ve been ready my whole life to be loved by you this way.
Your heavy doesn’t hurt me.”
I’m so in love with you I can’t breathe,
“You think I’m lettin’ you outta my bed after how good last night was? Sunshine, I’m still weak in the knees.”
“Don’t act so surprised, Sunshine. I’m in love with you. Been in love with you for a long, long time.”
“Ever consider you could never ever hold me back, even if you tried? You’re not a roadblock, Wyatt. You’re the wind beneath my fucking wings.”
But I gotta follow my girl, you know? I gotta help her make her dreams come true because, well, Sally is my dream.”
“You definitely owe us. You were fuckin’ unhinged in your twenties.”
You wanna go big, I say you go big. Love your man out loud, friend. Live your best damn life out loud.”
“That man is feral in bed, isn’t he?” Wheeler asks wistfully.
“All right, y’all. No one is dead, and Sally and Wyatt are gonna ride off into the Texas sunset together. I think this calls for a celebratory drink.”
“You’re the only one I wanna cook for,” he says. “The only one I wanna take wholesome literature and turn it into spicy prairie porn with. The only one I want to watch terrifying serial killer shows with. You’re the only one, Sally.”
“Good girl. You like it when Daddy tells you what to do, don’t you?”
