He was probably the hottest guy I’d ever seen in real life, and he was a total douche. Go figure.
my sister has this doll that kinda reminds me of you. All big-eyed and vacant.”
“Very civilized, Kitten. I’m sure you have a wild array of interesting names and gestures for me, but I’m not interested.”
So the dickhead had a name. Daemon—seemed fitting.
“I’m sorry. My brother is moody.” No shit.
Sometimes being around children was the perfect abstinence program.
All I could think of was Men in Black.
In that moment, she reminded me of a fairy princess. Or maybe a cracked-out Tinker Bell, considering how hyper she was.
I’d sooner believe the bags levitated over here on their own.
When I looked up, she was leaning the rake against the porch. Her entire left arm blurred.
Beautiful face. Beautiful body. Horrible attitude. It was the holy trinity of hot boys.
“What—are you deciding to talk to me now?” Smiling tightly, I grabbed a handful of mulch and dumped it. Rinse and repeat. “Yeah, it’s kind of a hobby. What’s yours? Kicking puppies?”
“What’s that?” Daemon said. “You have something to say, Kitten?”
You can sit there, because I’d rather eat glass than spend time with you.” He laughed. “That sounds drastic.”
His hand seemed to hum around my skin. It was the weirdest feeling ever.
“I hate you,” I hissed. “The feeling’s mutual.” He glanced over his shoulder. “Twenty bucks says you wear a one-piece swimsuit.”
“I think my sister finds you very special. I’m starting to wonder if she’s onto something.”
stilled. “Why do you call me that?” “Because it makes your hair stand up, like a kitten.”
There was no way I was going near him. Not even if he dangled a cookie in his hand.
“I like to watch you blush.” His voice barely above a murmur as his thumb traced circles on my cheek.
“There’s a McDonald’s down the street. We’ll get you a Happy Meal. Maybe that’ll make you happier.”
“She disappeared around the same time their brother did.”
“Actually, I was being serious.” He leaned over the table, staring up at me through thick lashes. “You’re not wanted here.”
“You aren’t like us. You are nothing like us. Dee deserves better than you, people that are like her. So leave me alone. Leave my family alone.”
“What are you? A vampire?” He rolled his eyes “Are you serious?”
He arched a brow. “And what do aliens look like?” “Not…not like you,” I sputtered. “They aren’t gorgeous—” “You think I’m gorgeous?” He smiled.
It was called Lux. And we are called Luxen.”
“You said you came during a meteorite shower? Where’s your spaceship?”
And you’re on our planet. How about a little respect, buddy.”
And you’re lit up like the Fourth of July right now.”
Images of rioting and looting flickered in my head, which was how we reacted to everything we didn’t understand.
“I…I miss the idiot,” he said raggedly. My heart clenched. The pain in his voice pricked at me. Not thinking, I turned and reached over, wrapping my arms around his all too stiff body. I hugged him, squeezing him as tightly as I could. And then I let him go before he overreacted and threw me off the rock.
Smiling, he cocked his head to the side. “Kitten, what are we going to get into?”
“Oh, you know, just that the color red is Daemon’s favorite.”
Daemon cleared his throat as he glanced away. “You…you look beautiful, by the way. Really too good to be with that idiot.”
He didn’t look at me, his eyes trained on Simon. “It was either this or I’d kill him.”
Daemon pushed Simon back. “Get the fuck out of my face, and I swear if you so much as look at her again, it will be the last thing you do.”
“Am I glowing?” “Like a Christmas tree.”
“You saved my life, Kitten.”
“You were like Snowbird,” Daemon said finally.
I promise you. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
“We could always have sex. I hear that uses up a lot of energy.”
Daemon kissed me.
