“Oh, I’m not opposed to sharing,” he says, “so long as I’m the one in charge.”
“You could have died tonight. Talk to me. Tell me what is going on. Let me help.”
“I thought I was under house arrest,”
“You are.”
“This isn’t my ...

“Arthur Maxwell likes to cut,” she says softly.
“Don’t get me wrong, Angel, you’re gorgeous. Stunning. But any scars you’ve got aren’t going to take away from that. They’ll only add to it. Because in our world, staying alive, is sexy as hell.”
It’s bad. Maybe not worse than what I’ve seen on a corpse but worse than anything I’ve ever even imagined on someone still alive.
He cut her like he made her cut his victims.
There’s more scarred skin than not
I look over at Oz and see the same rage I’m feeling reflected back at me. We make a decision then and there. A silent promise between us to make her father pay.
“I was wrong before,” I say. “You’re not a fighter. You’re a warrior.”
I don’t care that it’s fast. I don’t care that she lied. I don’t care about River’s rules. Freya is mine. And I will never let anyone hurt her ever again.
“That’s it,” Oz coaxes. “Take my cock like a good girl.”
River’s wrong, I’ve not told a single lie, but I also haven’t told the whole truth. This could end very badly for me.
If they want to know the truth, then I’m not going to sugar coat it. I’ll show them the real me.
“I think we need to set some ground rules, darling. As sweet as it is to hear you beg,” he leans close, “You call me sir when I’m inside of you.”
“Because liking you,” I say, “is the biggest fucking betrayal in the world.”
“Now lie back like a good girl and let me take care of you.”
One woman for all four of us. That way, between us, we’d always have time for her, and if one of us died on the job, she’d never be left alone.”
“It means you’re not just mine. You’re ours.”
I can’t deny how the guys make me feel though. Lying here with Jude, I’m at peace in a way I’m not sure I ever have been before. River and his team are bossy and protective and infuriating but for the first time ever, I feel like I belong.
“She cut into my mother’s body. She tortured her. I should hate her.”
“She was just a child, Eli.” Eva’s voice hardens. “A child raised by a monster. She didn’t stand a chance.”
“Maybe you found each other for a reason,”
the crosses were made by a left hander. Maxwell is right-handed.”
Eli, whoever cut into Posy’s chest, it wasn’t the same person who cut her neck.”
I’m as far gone as Jude. She’s it for me.
Holy shit. He’s going to fuck me into submission.
A code only I and one other person understand. The message is simple and to the point. An address followed by a threat: come alone or he dies.
For twenty-three years my life revolved around one person. Every decision I made, every lie I told, every person I pushed away, it was all to keep a single promise.
But I’d rather be sitting in a prison cell with Oz alive, than be the reason River, Jude and Eli lose a brother.
“Freya has a twin.”
“She’s protecting her sister,”
“He raised us as one. Did she tell you that?”
“She’s the reason I can’t kill anyone but if she’s dead, then so is my promise.”
I don’t care what happens to me. I will do anything. I will take all the torture. I will die if it means Freya is safe.
Angelica traces the knife over the crisscross scars on my chest. “We’re not matching anymore.”
“It’s okay. I can fix it now.”
She cuts over old scars, setting my chest on fire.
“Maddison Briggs: wife to Eddison March and mother... to Elijah March.”
I tortured Eli’s mother. I watched her die.
