Seeing Eartha at the Plaza was the first time I’d ever watched a female singer take over an entire room and hold it in her hands. She was tiny, but she was larger than life. I will never forget sitting in that opulent Art Deco room watching her onstage in a tight-fitting sequined dress with spaghetti straps and a fur stole. She held the attention of every man, woman, and child in the audience. At her peak in her mid-thirties, she was catlike in her movements.
