“It’s a shame it’s only going to be ninety-nine percent effective now. The only thing I want to do with you, pretty boy, is kick your ass on the ice,” she whispers.
“Sleep tight, Red. You have no idea what you’re in for.” “Do you have stupid nicknames for all the people you antagonize, or am one of the lucky ones?” I ask. “I only have them for the ones who try to pretend they don’t like it. But it’s obvious you’re blushing.”
“Pretty sure I wanted to bark when I saw her for the first time,”
I want to set off a confetti cannon. Hang a banner from the rafters of the Civic Center that says I MADE EMERSON HARTWELL SMILE. Put it on a T-shirt and wear it around town.
Play stupid games, you win stupid prizes.
“Should I put on flats? I don’t want to look too tall in the photos.” “Too tall?” I wrinkle my nose. “Is there such a thing as too tall? I love tall women.”
“Yes, really. You and your self-doubt, Red. We’re going to have to work on that,” he tuts.
“I forgot how much you hate it when I’m nice to you, Red.” Maverick knocks my helmet with his knuckles,
I love when she’s sassy. All tough girl and independent woman who doesn’t take shit. It’s kind of fun to be put in my place.
“I can pay for this,” she tells me, and I shrug. “I know you can, but I wanted to.”
The grin I give her earns me an eye roll, but I don’t care. At least she’s looking at me.
“What good is being rich if you don’t spend the money on people who deserve it?
He did throw on a hat on the quick drive from the arena then had the fucking audacity to turn it backwards on his head when he parked his Mercedes in the gravel lot out front.
I’ve always considered myself a feminist, but there’s something so goddamn sexy about a man in a backwards hat that has me ready to drop to my knees for the patriarchy.
“Have people made fun of you for that in the past?” “It doesn’t matter.” “It does if it’s important to you.”
I wonder what it would be like to see the good everywhere you go. To love and be loved without any hesitation.
“The things that make us happy are never stupid.
“Here I’ve been, thinking you only care about yourself. Turns out, you’re a nice guy.” “That makes you mad, doesn’t it, Red?” “Downright furious.”
“I get in my head sometimes. Thank you for validating me.”
How can I help?” “You don’t have to help.” “I don’t have to do anything, but I want to. Tell me what you need.”
“No one is saying you can’t. I want to help, Emmy. Let me help. Share the load with me. You don’t have to carry it alone.”
He dropped everything for me. He helped put me back together and stayed to make sure I was okay all because he wanted to. No one’s ever been so nice to me before, especially when I’ve felt small and uncomfortable and nothing like myself, and that’s disorienting.
“It means you know that kind of love is out there, and you’re worthy of it. There’s nothing silly about that, even if the words are make-believe. They can be real to you.”
“You are allowed to cry, but you’re not allowed to cry over shitty men. They don’t deserve your love and attention, let alone your tears.”
“You sweet man. You’re the furthest thing from a horrible person. You have a gentle soul that’s been beaten up and broken through no fault of your own. I’m so sorry anyone’s ever made you feel like you weren’t worth keeping for more than a night.
went and fell head over heels for the one person I swore I was immune to.
“You deserve all the nice things, Emmy girl, and when you’re with me, I’m going to give them to you.”
