It is from these hypotheses that the issue arises of whether Luke knew of and used Matthew’s birth narrative and whether, if Matthew’s narrative were thought to contain a virginal conception, this means that there is only one independent witness to this tradition within the New Testament, because Luke would have taken the notion from Matthew and developed it in his own way.
