It’s obviously not the imaginative kind of empathy that makes us truly understand how someone else feels, even someone we don’t see, for example, when we read about the fate of a character in War and Peace. Yet it’s good to keep in mind that imagination is not what drives empathy. Imagining another’s situation can be a cold affair, not unlike the way we understand how an airplane flies.
