The gray man stopped a few feet from us. Gold eyes narrowed as he looked us over. His face looked relatively human.
so fucking annoying that she's gendering this literal alien right off the bat, when she has very obvious evidence that this being isn't human. that just throws me out of the story entirely. this is an alien and/or fantastical being! i don't buy your pov as a scientist/biologist if you're just automatically gendering a literal entire new species to you right off the bat, based off no evidence and no indication this person's culture even has genders. at least go with a gender neutral assumption!
okay, listen, i do understand the genre this book is. i do. it's an explicitly breezy, dumb romance, not scifi. but like. come on.

WHY IS IT GENDERED. WHY IS THIS RANDO ALIEN A HE. THIS IS DRIVING ME INSANE. girl, please. use it, use they, but there is literally no reason given for all this gendering, and it makes me think so much less of this pov character as a scientist.
