not. It is wise for a writer to have some sideline by which to earn some money, until he has enough books behind him to provide a constant trickle of income.
It is surprising how many beginning writers blow their stacks over trivial requests like these or over being asked to remove a character from a book. Sometimes they quit agents in a huff or withdraw their manuscripts from publishers. Very often they have to come crawling back. A writer’s life is absolutely full of places to show pride, much more difficult and important places than these.
Like boxers, we may start to flag after thirty, that is, not be able to do on four hours’ sleep any longer, and then we begin to grumble about taxes, and to feel that the aim of society is to put us all out of business. It is then good to remember that artists have existed and persisted, like the snail and the coelacanth and other unchanging forms of organic life, since long before governments were dreamed of.
