Why the hell would you sign yourself up to invest in someone who would eventually say you were too flawed, too complicated, to keep around?

“Nope. You walk out now, you might get all weird about this and not come back. Honor is a fabulous thing, but sometimes pride can be a lot stronger, especially when you convince yourself it’s for the good of the other person.”

As breakups went, I’d expected screaming, shrieking, throwing things at me for what I’d done, but her stoic silence was worse.
