To all of the girls who have been told they don’t belong somewhere. I hope you have the time of your life proving them wrong.
“Making our winner of the Miss Americana pageant, Ava Bordeaux!”
Shoulders back, tits out, bitch. You were born for great things.
“Hi, I’m so sorry to bother you. So my friend over here—”
“No,”
“What?”
“No,”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t get a chance to explain. I’m—”
“Don’t care who you are, you’re not getting in there.”
“I just—”
“Don’t ...

I put my hands on my hips, taking a step closer and glaring up at him. It’s then I realize how tall he is—six foot two, maybe six foot three—and he towers over my five feet two inches in five-inch heels.
He’s the kind of handsome man who definitely knows he’s hot but doesn’t care about it.
“You know, I could be someone very important, and you’re just pushing me aside.”
“You’re not,”
“It’s my job to keep uninvited people out of this section. I’m simply doing my job,”
Life is too short to spend giant chunks of time with anyone who doesn't hold your interest.
“So, you know Jaime?”
“Who?”
“He keeps looking over his shoulder, sneaking glimpses of you.”
“Are we talking about how our big ol’ Jaime has a hard-on for the princess?”
“See ya later, big guy,” I say as I teeter on my tall heels in front of him and pat his chest. “You know, you’d be a lot hotter if you were just a smidge.” I hold up my pointer finger and thumb, pinching them so there’s a tiny gap between my fingers. “Less grumpy.”
“Noted,” he says, and even though he fights it, I can see it: the tiniest hint of a smile, the whisper of it on the edges of his lips. “Get home safe, princess.”
“We’re looking for someone who will travel with her, make sure she gets from place to place safely, but know that we’re also retaining your firm to keep her in line.”
No.”

You won’t just be following around some pageant queen and be bored out of your mind. In the past month, she’s filed three police reports due to the messages she’s received.”
“What kind of messages?”
“One death threat, two admirers sending candid photos of ...

“As a reminder, we ask you to maintain a professional composure at all times, since you will be so directly linked to the pageant and the Miss Americana brand. Any violation of the core tenants of this organization could result in you forfeiting your crown to the first runner-up,”
I love getting my fancy coffees, reading my silly little romance books,
“Bodyguard? Why do I need a bodyguard?”
“You,”
“Princess,”
I know God has to be a woman because no man has a sense of humor this good.
“My rules,”
“You listen to what I say. You do what I say. You do not deviate. We put safety first, and we’ll get through the next three months without too much of a headache.”
My job is to keep you safe. I am not a babysitter. Don’t act like a fucking idiot, and I’m not planning to report your every move to her.”
“But I’d also like to be friends. We’re going to be spending a lot of time together, and—”
“No,”

I’m so sorry you don’t like them, but that’s life, Princess.”
“Are you done?”
“What?”
“With your little tirade about how annoying it will be to be my bodyguard. It sounded like you had some really big feelings about it, and I want to make sure you let them...
