It’s this moment—with her lips nearly touching mine, her skin beneath my fingers—I realize I don’t want drunken nights at the bar or random hook-ups with people I barely know anymore. I don’t want surface level. I don’t want temporary.
I want to clean candy up off the ground with her. I want to help her do the dishes, to watch her dance around the kitchen with her daughter. I want to hear them laugh together and be the reason for their smiles. But I know I can’t tell Dahlia that, because every promise she’s ever relied on has been broken. I have to show her that this isn’t an arrangement for me. This isn’t fake. She may be mine for show, but I’m hers for real. All I’ve got to do is prove it.
but I have enough energy to run a marathon.
“You’re so beautiful, Dal. All the time. When you’re done up and when you’re dressed down. In the middle of the night and in the light of day. God”—he
you’re fucking stunning, including when you’re coming. I’ve been blessed to see it, so trust me when I say that.”
“I…”

“You listen so well, Wildflower. Doing so good for me, baby.”
“It is infuriating to me how blind you are to your own beauty.”
“Look at me, Dahlia.”
“I’m going to make sure you understand how pretty I find you. Every single piece of you. Every part of your body that made you who yo...

“When I tell you how beautiful you are, you’re not going to argue with me about it. You’re going to thank me, and you’re going to fucking listen. Am I understood?”
“Dahlia,”
“I speak three fucking languages—three—and when I tell you that there is not one word in any of them to describe the way you look right now. You’re beyond beauty. You’re beyond comparison to anything in this plane of existence. You’re something beyond comprehension. Unreal.”
“Me moriría de sed por ahogarme en ti,”
“Listen. Don’t push. Be a safe place for her to land, because I don’t think she’s ever had one of those before. I think she trusts you, which is a foreign concept to her. So just…keep being that.”
“Potrei annegare in questa figa. Muori qui. È mio. Tutto mio.”
“And that’s the last time I hear you say the word ‘God’ tonight, understood? You need to call out for someone, Wildflower? You say my fucking name.”
“Quiero vivir, ahogarme y morir entre tus piernas, cariño.”
“I see the way you look at me, Wildflower, and I want you to know that I’m seeing you the exact same way.”
That’s not possible, I think to myself. Because he’s like the spring—warm and bright. I’m like the winter, like the water we’re standing in now, frigid and cold.
“It made me feel like you didn’t want me.”
“Dahlia.”
“I’m desperate for you. I don’t just want you. I fucking crave you.”
“Well, I guess you’re just going to have to prove to me how desperate you are, then,”
“What would you do for a whole night alone with me?”
“I’d do any...

“Todo lo que siempre he querido. Te necesito para siempre. Dime que eres mía. Por favor. Mía, cariño. Sé mía.”
“Why did you do all this for me, Everett?”
“I know you said you can’t give me anything more than your body. I understand why that is. I don’t expect anything more.”
“But that doesn’t stop me from wanting to give you everything. All of me.”
“You deserved to know that you’re loved, Dahli...

“You’re my compass, Wildflower. I’ll follow you forever, because that’s where I find home.”
He still tastes like chocolate and all my dreams coming true. He tastes warm and enticing and like he was always meant to be mine. That bone-deep feeling of destiny washes over me once more, and for the first time in my entire life, I think I feel true contentment.
