But God has many enemies, and not all are elves. As Jakob struggled on, he saw men among the skewered. Then women. Then children. More of them, and more. Here was where the holy path had led them. The conclusion of the righteous cause. The better world they’d set out to build. A forest of the dead.
God had folk packing into his churches and filling up his collection plates and living by his Twelve Virtues every saint’s day, and far as she could tell he rarely stepped in on their behalf, so the chances of him sending down an angel for a faithless piece of shit like her must’ve been close to nil.
“If you’ve got a better idea, I’m … all ears.” Alex stared at her for a moment, then forced through her gritted teeth, along with a quantity of spit, “Was that a joke?” Sunny looked pleased. “Yes! All ears. I’m an elf. We have big ears and skinny bodies, so—” “I fucking get it!” screeched Alex. “I thought it was a good one.” Sunny looked slightly crestfallen.
“What did you steal? Was it candlesticks? Was it pie? Was it … hold on, I’ll get it—” “Are you just going to list everything there is?” Vigga shrugged. “We’ve got time.” Brother Diaz closed his eyes. “I didn’t steal anything.” “Was it bacon?”
“I trust you,” whispered Alex. She regretted it right off. It’s the moment you trust someone they shit all over you.
“You need to stop clinging to the notion that there’s only one right path. You’ll waste half your time panicking you’re not on it, and the rest backtracking to find it.
Her many hurts had faded to whatevers with a slightly dizzy sense of contentment and a warm love for the world, which might hate her but what the hell. You can’t choose how other people will be, only how you’ll be, and she’d chosen to be a good thing.
“I wasn’t stuck with a spear.” Alex prodded at her stomach as though checking for holes. “Or hacked with a sword or shot with an arrow…” “Well, I’m delighted for you,” growled Jakob.
“You came back for me?” whispered Alex. “Of course I did.” “I don’t deserve you.” “Of course you don’t,” said Sunny, and she pulled Alex down the corridor.
