It was the most irritated and happy he had ever been. Funny how kids could make you feel both at the same time.

Besides, her teeth were too white, and when she smiled it was like her eyes didn’t join in.

(And besides, he had run away before, and it had been a disaster. He’d been three years old. He had packed up some toys, a shoe and a packet of Mini Cheddars, and had got as far as the hallway before he needed a poo and forgot why he was running away in the first place.)
