“I think most of the nurses are afraid of him. The others probably want to sleep with him.” He does seem to have that sort of effect on people.
I didn’t even know Jack had a father. I mean, of course, he has a father, but he never talks about his family. I thought he was born in the arena with hockey skates on his feet.
“Everything okay in there?” I ask. I don’t know this man, but I feel like we’re trauma buddies or something.
I don’t love to clean under normal circumstances, but a good stress clean always makes me feel better.
She’s quiet as she studies me for so long I want to squirm under her scrutiny. No one makes me squirm.
“I get it. Ty isn’t here so you have to go all big brother on me.” Wait. What? Did she just refer to me as her brother?
“You’re going to regret that, old man.” “Old man?” He barks out a laugh. “I’m taking it easy on you.” “Please don’t,”
but curiosity gets the better of me. Mom always said it was the reason I got into so much trouble. Curiosity didn’t kill the cat, but it was the reason she barely passed high school, or something like that.
“Sounds made-up. Are you sure he’s real and not some psycho catfishing and preying on young women?” “He’s real.” “How can you be so sure?” I bite on the corner of my lip before admitting, “I looked him up on social media.” “That could be fake too.” “Oh no, I went deep. I found his parents and his sister. There was even a yearbook photo of him. Thor is short for Thorson. Also, I can handle myself.”
“That’s it?” Reaching forward, he pulls the door closed between us. “I can’t believe you just did that,” I yell at him through the door. “Night, Ev.”
“No, don’t run away yet.” She stops kissing me only to protest, then covers my mouth with hers again. “Not running away,” I manage to get out as we devour each other. “Taking you with me.”
Everly Kent drives me fucking wild. And she knows it.
“Jack fucking Wyld, if you leave me like this, I swear to the hockey gods I will cheer for the other team at every game next season.”
“I’ve slammed plenty of guys into the boards for a lot less than looking at my girl.” “Your girl?” I ask pointedly. His answer is a Cheshire cat grin. So fucking cocky and confident.
I keep waiting for her to realize that maybe this isn’t a good idea, but so far all I’ve done is convince myself that maybe it is.
She’s standing close enough now that I can smell her sunscreen mixed with my body wash. I like that she smells like me.
He’s right. It’s hard to picture Everly being that nervous about anything. She’s fearless and headstrong. And holy shit, topless.
I can’t play this game. He’s way better at it than I am.
She kisses me hard like she’s pouring every ounce of anger into it. If this is her idea of punishing me, then sign me the fuck up.
Jack is all the fun of a night on the town and all the warmth of a night in.
“Yours?” Her brows inch higher combatively. “Fine. Maybe you’re not mine yet, but I’m yours.
I continue praising her, remembering what Tyler said about Everly’s need for approval. I doubt he had this scenario in mind when he handed me that information.
“Also, I like your dad.” “He’s cranky and irritable, and that’s probably going to increase as they wean him off the meds.” “I know how to handle cranky and irritable.” She means me and well, fair, I guess.
