What the hell is going on, and why are you holed up in here looking like an injured bear that raided a campsite?”
I like Everly more than I like the average person, but at this moment I can’t remember why.
“Take a load off, Ev. You look stressed.” “That’s because you stress me out.” “I’m perfectly agreeable right now.” “Yeah, exactly. It’s scaring me more than being in this hospital.” Then he laughs. Truly terrifying.
“I can admit that I have enjoyed riling you up a time or two.” “A time or two?” “Fine. It’s basically a hobby at this point.”
“Are you afraid I’m going to get all clingy? Because you’re hot but honestly half the time I want to punch you in the face, so I don’t think that’ll be a problem.”
“God dammit, Everly. I’m not afraid of you getting attached.” He hovers over me. Even in my heels, he’s a good head taller than me. His stare surveys my face, settling on my lips and then dragging up to my eyes. “I’m afraid I will.” I’m still deciphering his meaning when he steps to me, lifts his left hand to the side of my neck, and kisses me.
“You are infuriating. You know that?” “I do. Thank you.”
She’s under my skin, in my bloodstream, consuming my thoughts.
Everly Kent drives me fucking wild. And she knows it.
“I’ve slammed plenty of guys into the boards for a lot less than looking at my girl.” “Your girl?” I ask pointedly. His answer is a Cheshire cat grin. So fucking cocky and confident.
I want to know every last detail about her.
“Or you didn’t want me to show up looking a hot mess and embarrass you.” With a slight shake to his head, he grins at me. “Not possible. You could go exactly like you are and still be the most beautiful woman there.”
“You should get some sleep,” I say reluctantly. “Me too. Brian will be by early.” She smirks. “How’s that going?” “Good,” I admit. “Now that he’s not hitting on you.” “I can’t believe you fired him.” “I didn’t like the way he looked at you.” “How’d he look at me?” “Like he wanted what was mine.” “Yours, huh?”
She’s got me wrapped so tightly around her finger.
looking at me like I’m the most important person in the world
“Life is a series of decisions. Some are bigger than others, but every choice builds on the next. Sometimes we make decisions that feel small in the moment and have big impacts on our life. Other times they only feel big in the moment.”
“I meant what I said earlier. I miss you. Seeing you every day, talking, hanging out, having you in my space, all of it. Nothing feels right anymore without you.”
He’s home.
“Yours.” His voice is little more than a growl. “I’m yours.”
“You are incredible. You don’t believe it yet and that’s okay. I’m going to keep telling you until you realize it for yourself.”
She might be mine, but she owns me. Irrevocably.
“Everly, my Everly, sends you books?”
It’s okay to need people, Jack. It doesn’t make you less capable. I want to be here. Let me do that for you like you do for everyone else.” “I do need you.” I wrap my arms around her. “More than you know,
“Ready to go home?” Jack asks. “You mean your home?” “No.” He shakes his head. “I mean ours.”
“I’ve never been more sure of anything. I’m yours, Ev. Now and always.
