“You’re a good human, Thea.” Rhodes came back into focus in front of me, and I shook my head. “I’m a mess.” She grinned. “All the best people are.”
Everyone handled the name thing differently. I’d never known Nora as anything but Mom. But I’d also come into her care as an infant. While Trace had come to live with us at twelve, he had also quickly adopted the term. Rhodes, Arden, and Kye had all gone for Nora. Mom never minded. She loved all of us the same.
“Repression will kill you. You’ll die of a stroke or a heart attack. Life is for the living.” “Preach it,” Kye agreed.
“But we can’t let one bad experience sour the rest of our lives. We can’t let the bad win. Make us stop living. If we lock ourselves down, we don’t just keep out the bad. We keep out the good, too.”
“Why are you putting up with me?” I asked, my voice little more than a hoarse whisper. Shep’s eyes locked with mine. “Because everything about you screams that you’ve been fighting alone for too damn long, Thorn. You need someone to help carry the weight for a little while. I might not be able to fix everything, but I can help carry the load.”
“Alone is the only place that’s safe.”
“You’re a good person.” I whispered the words into the air around me. “You’re not perfect. But you try to be kind. You try to do right. You’re not evil.”
“Thank you for helping me get my life back.”
“You’re not alone. Not anymore.”
