sometimes we never needed to speak at all. We just knew what the other was feeling.
There would be a million more parties, but there would only ever be one Lizzie Young.
I didn’t want to see my mother upset. This was the woman who gave me life.
“I’m always happy when I’m with you.”
“I’ll always pick you, Liz.” Hugh’s arm came around my waist and he pulled me closer to his chest. “You’ll always be first choice.” “For trips?” “For everything.”
Unable to stop myself, I pulled him closer so our chests were touching and wrapped my arms around his neck as tight as I could. Because I wanted to keep him right here forever.
My one light in the darkness was the boy with whiskey eyes and a smile that healed parts of me the medicine couldn’t.

Hugh was the only person who kept coming, and to me, his presence meant more than the entire community of Ballylaggin. The whole town could stay away forever if it meant I got to keep him. If it meant this boy stayed.
“You’re going to live a great life, Liz. A little complicated, sure, and maybe challenging at times, but it’ll be a fucking great one.” “I am?” “Yeah, Liz, you are.” “How can you know that?” “Because I’m going to make sure of it.”
“Give it a month, and you’ll be the school’s sunshine sweetheart.” “You really think so?” “I know so.” “What about you?” “Me?” “Yeah, what will you be?” “You can’t have sunshine without rain,” I offered with a shrug. “I’ll be the school raincloud.”
this girl was heaven on earth to me.
There wasn’t another person on this planet I could give myself to like I had given myself to her. She could do whatever she wanted to me, and I would lie down and take it. Because I was stuck on her like glue.
We weren’t even, and we never would be. Yeah, I crushed his nose and caused two fractures in his cheekbone, but he crushed my world and fractured my future. His bones would heal. My heart wouldn’t.
Please speak out. Do not suffer in silence. Your voice matters. Your life is precious. <3
