“I’m glad you finally reached out to me.” I blinked, taken aback by that comment. “Finally?” He nodded. “Since her marriage to your cousin, Belle keeps telling me that I need to find you a mate.”

“Animals are the most honest beings in the universe. Unlike people, they don’t fake or exaggerate illness for attention. They don’t trust easily, especially when they’re wounded and vulnerable. But once you earn their trust, it is the sincerest thing you will ever experience. You would have to do something truly horrible to lose it, if ever. No words can describe how they cuddle you to express their gratitude, even when they’re beyond help and know their time is near. Deep in their hearts, they know you tried your best.”

“Do you want to talk about it? It could help,” he insisted when I scrunched my face. “I could feel your pain all the way inside the other room and would love to help ease some of it, if possible. I’m happy to listen.”

Discovering that she’d been a victim of abuse had my blood boiling with the need to crack that wretched male’s skull.

She was my soulmate. I would bring her the stability, love, and support she needed to heal.

“I am not strange,” I snapped. “The fact that I have my own desires and ambitions—which happen to differ from yours—doesn’t make me weird. It only makes me an individual. Why should I be a copy of my brother or someone else? What’s wrong with being me? And above all, why is it so hard for you to just love me for who I am and the way I am?”

“My braid is no longer yours!” I snapped. “You don’t get to touch it anymore.”

“Farah, I can see that the prospect of Kayog leaving you with me scares you,” he said in a soft voice, as if speaking to a frightened child. “There’s no need for that. On my honor, I will never harm you. Kayog is always right. If he brought you to me, it’s because you and I are destined. Remember that there is no rush. This is merely a formality, a contractual wedding to grant you every protection enjoyed by the citizens of Xoccoris.”

“You’ve got yourself a wonderful male,” Feidin said, her face suddenly taking on a serious expression. “I prayed to the gods that Krogal would find himself a good female. Too few can fully appreciate the greatness of his hearts, which are both gentle and fearless.”

“I bind you as my protector and as the protector of our home and of any offspring we may be blessed with,” Feidin continued, which I once more repeated. “I bind you as my life mate, as my best friend, and as my lover. For as long as you draw breath, you are mine. And for as long as I draw breath, I pledge to love and honor you, to nurture our bond, and to be your safe haven.”

would rather be. We may not be in love with each other just yet, and it would probably take a while for us to get there, but I didn’t doubt we would. I was home, and he was my soulmate.

“You’re forcefully spoiling me! That’s bullying!” she said before taking another mouthful of food and chewing with pretend anger.

“If you get hurt, I will spank you raw.”
