“Darling,” he said, his voice low and fierce. “I would burn this world for you.”
“Speak another’s name in this bed again and know you have assigned their soul to Tartarus.”
“You are my weakness, losing you is my greatest fear, and your love is my most treasured possession.”
“I’m sorry. I love you. You can trust me, my word. I—” “Shh, my darling,” he soothed, his hands moving from her waist to her thighs. “I will forever regret my anger. How could I ever question your love? Your trust? Your word? When you have my heart.”
“Fuck privacy. I needed you, needed to know you still wanted me despite…everything.”
“I will always want you, and I would have welcomed you to my bed any night.”
Hermes crossed the room to a stack of folded towels and threw one at him. “Get wet, Daddy Death,” Hermes said. * * *
“I have never loved anyone as I love you,” he murmured as if he wanted no one else to hear, though he would gladly share those words with the world. “I can’t put it into words—there are none that come close to expressing how I feel.”
“Marry me, Persephone. Be my queen. Say you’ll stand by my side…forever.”
“There are few truths in this world,” he said, “but the one you must always remember is that I love you.”
“I love you too,” she whispered and brought his mouth to hers.
Murder doesn’t suit you, goddess.”
“Let me be perfectly clear,” he said, leaning close as he spoke. “I do want to fuck you. More importantly, I love you—deeply, endlessly. If you walked away from me today, I would love you still. I will love you forever. That’s what Fate is, Persephone. Fuck threads and colors…and fuck your uncertainty.”
“You look like a fucking queen.”
She smiled as she answered, “I am your queen.”
“I love you. Even if the Fates unraveled our destiny, I would find a way back to you.”
“You called, Daddy Death?”
“Find Leuce,” he said. “Oh no,” Hermes said. “What did she do this time?” “Nothing different from before,” Hades replied. “She just fucked with the wrong god.”
“Help me forget what I saw in the forest,” she begged. “Kiss me. Love me. Ruin me.”
And to be honest, he looked forward to witnessing this—Persephone looking radiant in her Divine form, wrapped in a white peplos, being who she was meant to be, a goddess and queen.
magic. Plus, I will take great pleasure in knowing you are thinking of my mouth while you put your mother in her place.”
“No, Mother, Hades is just one of many things I gained when I left your prison.”
Hecate seemed to shudder at that word, and despite everything, he smirked. “Fiancé,” he said. Hecate blinked. “Excuse me?” “Fiancé,” he said once more and added, “Persephone agreed to marry me.”
Then his gaze leveled with Hephaestus’s. “Are you trying to re-create Poseidon’s trident?” The God of Fire was frozen in place, but not out of fear. This was different. He was stiff all over, his muscles rippling, as if he were about to have to defend himself. “It’s not what you think,” he said, his tone darkening. “I hope it’s exactly what I think,” Hades replied. “Hephaestus, tell me you’ve chosen a side.” * * *
“Persephone,” he said. “I would have chosen you a thousand times over, the Fates be damned. Please…become my wife, rule beside me, let me love you forever.”
“Of course. Forever.”
