“Boo!” Hades whirled and punched Hermes in the face. The God of Mischief stumbled back and clamped his hands over his nose. “Motherfucker! Why did you do that?” he demanded. “You scared me,” Hades said simply, lips curling at the sight of the god’s pain. “I did not,” Hermes said, dropping his hands. Any evidence of the strike to the face was already healed. “You wanted to punch me.” “Don’t give me an excuse,”
“I suppose I’ll have to find someone else to plague Dionysus with dreams of bloody castration.” Hermes pursed his lips as if considering. “I suppose I can ask Morpheus or Epiales,” Hades said. “He is the personification of nightmares after all, and he would do a fine job.” “Fine?” Hermes scoffed. “Let me do it. I’ll show you bloody castration.” “But you have already declined,” Hades said. “I take it back,” Hermes said. “And you know what? his fingers curling into the paper. All he could think was that she’d promised not to write about Apollo. Except that he knew she’d never actually promised.

The next time he appeared, it was beside the cow. He rested his head on its back and threw his arms around its middle. “Oh, Rosie!” He moved around to her front and lifted her long face in his hands, touching his nose to hers. “I have missed you.” Watching this exchange made Hades feel very uncomfortable. “I’ll take you far from here where you can never be taken away from me again.” He kissed the cow’s nose—once, twice, and as he went in for the third, Hades appeared. “I’m sorry. She needs to know you're ACTUALLY FIGHTING for her! Actions over words bitch
“Persephone is your best friend. This is for her.” “But Persephone admits she’s my best friend,” Hermes said. “Does it mean as much when I say it?” “It’s like saying I love you,” Hermes explained. “I might know it, but it’s good to hear.” There was a long pause, then Hades mumbled, “You’re my best friend.” “What was that?” Hermes asked. “I couldn’t hear you.” “You’re my best friend,” Hades repeated quickly. “Ah, once more, with feeling.” Hades glared and said deliberately, “You’re my best friend.” Hermes preened. “I’ll have something for you by the evening.”
“I should have listened.” “Shh,” he soothed, bending to kiss her mouth. “No more talk of what you should have done. What is, is. There is nothing else to be done but move forward.” He recognized he needed to take Hecate’s advice just as much as she did, but the words worked to calm her,
