“No matter where we go or what we’re doing, we gon’ have each other’s backs. Even if that means you need to climb on mine until you figure out your next move and can stand on your own two. This is survival for us.”
“Fuck, no! I just never thought I’d be married with a family this soon, but every time I hold my daughter or watch her and Whoop while they’re sleeping, I know I want to do that shit until our caskets drop.
“Two fingers. We tap ‘em twice to the front, once on the back, and then we lock it in.” He linked their pointer fingers together as she beamed. “Two fingers and three taps ‘cause we met in the twenty-third hour. That’s ours, so don’t go sharing it with nobody else.”
“We gon’ feed each other. Our shit has to go both ways or you gon’ end up looking for food off an empty plate. I feed so many mouths, you gotta check in and make sure I ain’t starving, aight?”
“Well, maybe they should’ve. I bet you’d have less kids if it was more hand holding and less playing mommas and daddies.”
“No, but your words stuck with me. You have trauma, love, defeat… you have a story to tell, Pierre.
“Don’t act like you care, Shabu, ‘cause none of y’all muthafuckas give a damn about me for real. My big brother fucks with you harder than me, and both of y’all stay on my head about what the hell I ain’t doing like I don’t know this shit!” Pierre broke out of Shabu’s hold and scrambled to rest his back against the couch. He floundered, gripping the neck of his hoodie as he fumed, “My own pops looks at me like I ain’t shit every time he sees me, so you think I care what y’all think? Fuck all you niggas. You’re talking about you’ll take me out before I crash. Nigga, hand me the gun, and I’ll do

“Nobody would’ve missed me,” she continued with a strained smile that he saw through. “It’s different for you, though. You have to keep fighting because my sad ass would be sadder than usual. Your parents and sisters would be heartbroken. Los would be crushed, and Shabu would go off the deep end when he can’t afford to. Your kids would... well... I guess they’d be like me after I lost mine.”
You’re just scared. The thought of losing scares you, but the chance of winning scares you even more. You know what’s funny?”
“Just know that I’m proud of you, whether this works out or not. You’re trying, so don’t beat yourself up if it doesn’t go as smoothly as you hoped. I’ll come with you as many times as you need to get this thing going. Remember what I told you, Pierre. Nothing to lose...”
“You can leave if you want, but me and Paris are staying. We’ll sit here until you come back tomorrow and the day after that, and the day after that...”
My manman used to tell me that God had angels watching over me because it’s no other reason I’m still alive.
“The tears of a phoenix have healing powers. The shit I read said it can cure even a dying person.
“Tell that hoe if she ain’t first place, then she’s dead last.” Treasure quoted a line from Pierre’s track,
Her face scrunched as she tried recalling what Pierre put on his. “Ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, onions, and chili.” She glanced over her shoulder at his mellowed tone answering a question she didn’t ask.
“It’s a number I want to remember because it changed my life for the better. It showed me I had untapped potential and a lot to gain. I probably wouldn’t be where I am now without it, so it’s stamped on me forever.”
“I needed to let you know before I leave, so you wouldn’t question what you are to me. Even if nothing ever comes of this, and you end up with someone else, you were something special to me. You’re a story I can tell with a smile because I don’t regret one second.”
“Cheers to us twin flames who made it through the muthafuckin’ twenty-third hour unscathed. Keep soaring, Bird.” “Keep shining, Superstar,”
