guess I’m not the only guilty one, then. See you on Love Island.”

It’s some sort of HR nightmare I’ve stepped into. Or fantasy. No . . . ah—nightmare. Jack is your nemesis.
“I’m not sorry you thought I was someone else because for once I got a taste of what it’s like to be a person you don’t hate, and I . . .”
His smile is so warm right now I could roast a marshmallow in front of it.
“Jack . . .” He stops and turns his head back to me. “Why did you have a spare helmet?” All I can see is my own refection in his visor. He waits so long to respond that I know he’s looking for a lie but can’t find one. “I hoped you would ride with me some day and I wanted to be prepared.”
His words snip the last vines of loneliness from my heart and replace them with balloon strings.
I run my hand against the plastic wall until I find the opening. And then I extend my hand out in front of me and come in contact with Jack’s abs. “Whoa, Ms. Walker. Buy me dinner first,”
“You think you’re unlovable, but I think I’ve never known how to love until knowing you.”
