Hunters were a group of magically altered humans that were elite members of the human king Taran’s personal army.
A breeze danced around him, circling under his cloak and carrying his scent straight toward my hiding place. I crinkled my nose at the strange foreign scent of this male. Fresh evergreen pine paired with a frost that reminded me of snowcapped mountains.
“She is not just a shifter.” Shadow opened his eyes, looking directly at me as he spoke. “She’s … more than that.”
“There seems to be more to you … than I expected,” Daxton whispered in a low tone that vibrated through all my senses.
I loved the feel of the wind and the beauty of the sky. The openness of the world above, with no shackles holding you down, was a dream. My animal stirred inside me, enjoying the feel of the breeze across my skin. I knew she craved the wind, too.
There was suddenly a softness in his hardened stare that I hadn’t seemed to notice before. “It is astonishing what treasures you can find hidden in plain sight, is it not?” he asked, his gaze scanning over the beach before returning to look at me. “Unparalleled beauty can be missed if one does not take the time to look. But today, I’m fortunate enough to find what I have been looking for.”
“And what exactly have you been looking for?” I boldly asked. “A hidden treasure,” he replied, his stare boring into me, nearly taking my breath away.
“You …” Daxton’s voice was raspy, holding an air of uncertainty that caught me off guard. “You are so much more than what is seen on the surface, Spitfire,” Daxton replied.
knew this voice. “Don’t give in.” His plea was full of sorrow and pain. “We are on our way. You must be brave for a little longer, Spitfire. Trust that I will find you. We will always find each other.”
I will teach you how to become a weapon so you no longer have to live in fear of one being used against you ever again.” “And strong enough to never let anyone use me either,” I added. The memory of what Gilen said to me last night flashed into my mind.
“I’ll find you later, Daxton,” I called out. To which he replied, “We will always find each other.”
“Yes, you can trust me,” he whispered softly against my brow just before I drifted to sleep. “I trust you.”
You don’t need to worry,” Daxton huffed, stroking my head to encourage me to unbury my face. His smile was relaxed, just like his gentle touch that continued migrating down my arms as he pulled me closer toward him. “I’m strong enough to hold you through the night.”
He spoke slowly, his voice like cold death. “Approach Skylar again and touch her without her permission … I will freeze your beating heart inside your chest and cut you down where you stand.”
Daxton said it like a promise. “You are only still breathing because I know it will hurt her more if I kill you.”
“Speak that way about her again, and I will end your pathetic excuse of a life. I don’t care what position you hold or what treaties still stand.”
Neither of us moved away from the other as I leaned my heavy head onto his shoulder. To my surprise, he didn’t turn me away. Instead, he wrapped his other arm around me, holding me up just in case I wasn’t able to stand any longer on my own.
“Never underestimate your worth in my presence, Skylar Cathal.” He winked, making a point to use my full name.
“Touch her, and you die.” Daxton’s voice was low and calm, more terrifying than the deafening roar of a battle cry.
