“Time is precious. Make sure you spend it with the right people.” UNKNOWN
This woman is my sisters’ best friend, which makes her part of my circle. And I protect what’s mine.
Kenzie takes another small step into my side, and that bad fucking feeling grows. Guess that’s going to be my excuse for what I’m about to do. Couldn’t have anything to do with the fact that this girl was the first girl I ever crushed on before I even knew all the ways I wanted to make her scream my fucking name.
“Nixon Sinclair.” I let my glare go dark like it does before a fight on the ice. “Her boyfriend.”
“Mackenzie would be fine without me,” I confirm because this woman is more than capable of taking care of herself. “But she won’t need to be. My first preseason game isn’t until the following week. I’ll be escorting her.”
The whole conversation left a sour taste in my mouth. Not because I mind going with Mac. More like the idea of someone else being interested makes me feel . . . something. Angry. Frustrated. Possessive as hell. All emotions I have no right to feel about this woman. But that doesn’t change them. Friends, I remind myself as I move the pillow over my head. She’s my friend. My stunningly beautiful, incredibly sexy, intelligent friend.
Fun fact I learned in med school . . . It’s clinically proven your body releases oxytocin and dopamine, giving your brain a boost, when you’re sexually attracted to someone. Hence, your pupils appearing to dilate.
Nixon’s hand skims up my neck, and his callused thumb brushes along my jaw, sending delicious shivers dancing down my skin. “Baby, if you want to play with safe words, we can leave now.”
“Your sisters told me this was just one friend going with another friend. But I’ve been watching you, Nixon. And you’re not looking at Kenzie the way you look at a friend.”
“I want to taste your come on my tongue.” Her pink lips form the sweetest O. “I want to hear you scream my name as you’re coming on my cock.” I’m practically shaking with the need to fuck Mackenzie Hayes in a way I’ve never needed anything before. “I want to remind you just how incredible sex can be.”
“Friends who share orgasms, Mac. And I want your first one now.”
“There’s always time, Mackenzie. And you can have it all. A career. A husband. A family. Whatever you want, you can have. It might not be easy, but the best things never are.”
Crying is not a sign of weakness. Since the minute you were born it’s been a sign of life. —Kenzie’s Secret Thoughts
The last coherent thought I have is, I guess maybe I wasn’t broken after all. I was just waiting for Nixon Sinclair to come along and ruin me for all other men.
Behind every strong woman is a story that left her with two options. Sink or fucking swim. Floating through life isn’t an option.
She’s holding Brynn’s baby, and I know without a doubt in my fucking mind, that woman right there is mine.
Fuck. This is it. This is that thing Dad always talks about. That moment when you just fucking know, and it all changes.
“When you’re in my room, you wear my name.”
“Because you’re mine, Mac. I think you always have been. And I’ll always protect you and take care of you.”
It’s in the eyes . . . Always in the eyes.
“Time’s a thief, Mac. Don’t give it any more than you have to give. Don’t live your life in fear of the what-if.”
Forgiving is easy. Forgetting is hard. Admitting you may have overreacted is fucking torture.
